Discount Because of Winn-Dixie

Because of Winn Dixie is a great story about a little girl named Opal who moves to Naomi, Florida with her father, the preacher. Opal's mother left when she was 3 years old and this has left her wondering about her mother. While in the local Winn Dixie, Opal finds a dog and names him Winn Dixie. The little girl soon makes friends with other lonely people in the town. She finds out through their conservations that these other people have endured hurt and loneliness just as she has. The story is filled with themes such as hope, sorrow, friendship, accepting others for who they are, and new beginnings. This book addresses some of the modern day problems facing children today.

I am a teacher who included this book in literature circles choices. My 4th grade students really enjoyed this book and watched the movie afterwards. These students found the book to be funny, sad, and encouraging. It is an easy read and can be read by most 4th graders on their own. My students participated in the book study and eagerly read it daily until it was finsihed.

Buy Modern Mythology (Dodo Publishing)

If you're only familiar with Andrew Lang from the [color] fairy books and are hoping for a book of tales, this isn't that.

What it is is a scholarly position paper in a then-current debate over the nature and origin of mythology. Andrew Lang is attempting to refute the theories of Max Muller, who argued that mythology was "a disease of language." This book is Andrew Lang's refutation of that theory and endorsement of the countervailing theory that mythology is a survival from the misperceptions and reflexive animism of primitive peoples.

I can only imagine this text being of interest to those who are truly *dedicated* to the study of comparative mythology.Get more detail about Modern Mythology (Dodo Publishing).

Order The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle

Among the titles following The Story of Doctor Dolittle, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, is one of the the most exciting. This one is about his travels with the interesting animals who are his friends and companions. Hugh Lofting has managed to capture the human characteristics we sometimes see in animals and turn them into memorable figures. Dr. Dolittle's mode of travel is intriguing; the places he visits are fun and funny and exciting.

Continue to read this series. The many attempts at cinematic shortcuts to the stories fall short when compared with the real work. The charm of his adventures can be captured in no other way than a good read.Get more detail about The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle.

Where To Buy In the Days of the Comet

An extremely verbose book on the social and political issues between the Boer War and World War I in England with a solution to the world's problem via the green mist left by Earth passing through a comet's tail. I truly enjoyed the movie renderings of "The War of the Worlds" (the first version with Gene Barry), "The Time Machine" and "First Man on the Moon"; but I am let down by the wordiness of this novel and hope my reading of "War of the Worlds" and "Time Machine" do not do the same.Get more detail about In the Days of the Comet.

Shop For Fire

To the east of the lands in Graceling resides a kingdom called the Dells, a place where colorful monster animals roam among the normal ones. Monster animals can be distinguished by their vivid, dazzling colors; "A dappled gray horse in the Dells was a horse. A sunset orange horse was a monster." Though gifted with a terrible beauty, monsters are vicious and crave the flesh of both humans and other monsters, making them dangerous, feared foes of the citizens. Seventeen-year-old Fire, who has the ability to control minds and shock others with her impossible beauty, is the last human monster in the Dells. Easily identified by her flaming red hair, Fire experiences a tough childhood as a monster; she is equally loved and hated by the people, and her abilities terrify everyone.

Meanwhile, King Nash attempts to maintain his rickety rule over the Dells, while furtive rebel lords raise personal armies to unseat him and claim the throne. The land is teeming with bands of robbers and mysterious thieves, and nobody is safe. With war looming on the horizon, the royal family bestows Fire with the duty of uncovering a conspiracy to kill the king, by using her mental abilities to their advantage. Along the way, Fire must face additional challenges including the quest for the approval and then heart of the prince, the problems that come with loving her late father, who was once the most hated man in the Dells, and facing the numerous people who believe that she is as cruel as he was.

Though this book is often called the prequel of Graceling, it's more of a companion novel, taking place in the same world though in a different land. Save for one important villain, Fire has an entirely different ensemble of characters than Graceling. When I picked it up at the library, I expected to read some half-thought out prequel that would feed off the success and popularity of Graceling. However, instead of being a weak and watery novel, Fire is something else entirely; it would be extraordinary even if Graceling never existed. After a slow beginning, the pace speeds up as Cashore hurls readers into a fantastical world, where she spins an intricate story riddled with side plots. This book is marinated with medieval politics, and Cashore manages to portray the darker side of the court in an engaging manner. It seems as though Cashore's writing has improved since Graceling, though she still successfully manages to add tasteful details to the plot without tripping the fast-paced momentum.

A vast array of characters, Cashore forgets about no one, giving personalities to a variety of people including the guards, maids, princes, soldiers, and even the horses. Fire, the protagonist with crimson hair, is extremely likeable; she is gentle, tough, independent, has good morals, and would never to flaunt her unwanted beauty. However, she seems ruled by her situations and her reactions rather than by her true personality; Cashore could have elaborated on her character a lot further. One of the most intriguing parts of this book was the relationship between Fire and her monster father Cansrel, who was once the most heartless person in the Dells before his death. Though Cansrel was a cruel, rabid murderer and rapist who basked in destruction, he truly loved his daughter. Fire loved and hated him at the same time, and her conflicting emotions fuel part of the story. Cashore exquisitely executes Fire's haunting memories, using them to tell the tale of Cansrel, and though he is dead before the book begins, he is an artfully developed character. Later in the novel, a shocking secret about their relationship is revealed, thrusting Fire's character and the reason for her motives into an entirely different light.

Leck, the only character also starring in Graceling, is an unnervingly creepy child, and as disturbed as I imagined him to be, complete with his two eerily different Graceling eyes. Fans of his role as king in Graceling may be disappointed to learn that he is not the main villain, though he does serve as a pivotal character for the plot. With such a cold demeanor, he mirrors a young Cansrel.

I was not partial to the romance between Fire and prince Brigan, since their relationship unfurled too quickly; they abruptly go from mortal enemies, to awkward, tentative friends, to lovers, without time to develop in between the stages. Prince Brigan was absent from the palace and the plot for the majority of the time, and I wish he could extended his stay in the pages.

Fire, though an individually strong novel, shares many aspects to its companion novel Graceling. For example, both books have similar female protagonists who yield an enormous amount of power; for Graceling's Katsa, it is the ability to kill, and for Fire, it is ability to control minds. I often wonder which heroine would be victorious if the two ever battled, because they are both equally powerful in different ways and are weak where the other is strong. These two novels also focus on the humanizing of the protagonist and her inner journey on coming to terms with her own power, a hazardous journey, and a royal romance. Despite being similar, these books are very solid novels that will immerse you in their separate fantastical worlds. It should be kept in mind, that Fire is a lot darker than Graceling; it is full of rape, violence, and lust. Since these two novels are two similar, in my head, I can almost hear them demanding to be compared. Overall, though Fire is sensational, I prefer Graceling because its backbone consists of a strong, more character-driven plot, and it contains more action. I yearn for this duo on my bookshelf, along with Bitterblue, which is due in 2011.

Overall, Fire is an astoundingly brilliant novel that is a seven course meal, since it consists of everything a book lover's heart could desire: vexing mystery, romance, action, violence, intriguing characters, mythical places, and a layered plot that meanders into unexpected places. I would recommend reading Graceling first, since that is the order it was published.

Wicked Lovely This instant

It is my understanding this author's majority works are in the romance genre. I had/have not read any other works by Ms. Marr and was unsure about reading any hard core romance. Traditional romance = YAWN in my opinion. After reading the reviews and determining the story line and plot involved some fantasy. I thought fairies aren't my top choice but why let that stop me from trying a free book. This book is not with out it's flaws. As long as you don't get hung up on the holes it's a fun read. Below are my thoughts of the players if you will....
I thought The "Summer King" Keenan was short sighted, self involved, and lacked Whit. He wasn't the prince we picture when we think romantic.
At times the main character Aislinn seemed unable to come up with original ideas. She seemed to need her boyfriend's problem solving skills at every turn.
Donia was one of my favorite characters in this book. She kept her head up in spite of her emotional scars. She was more then fair through out the book even though she had a large personal stake in the out come. Integrity and self sacrifice would describe Donia well.
The winter queen was evil and that came across really clearly in this book. I easily disliked her soon after reading the first chapter.
Grams was a minor character and of no importance to the story line in my opinion.
My fav character by far is Aislinn's human best friend. Seth is perfection in my book. He is smart, loyal, brave among other excellent qualities. Seth is the reason why i may read book two in the series.
The plot is simple really. Evil is the majority rule in fea land. Prince has been manipulated by mother/evil queen and needs to find his queen in order to rule and better the fea world. OK so it's a little more plot to it then that but i can't say much without spoilers.Get more detail about Wicked Lovely.

The Daring Book for Girls Best Quality

My daughter saw this in the bookstore, and stated that she "reeeeaaaallllly" wanted it. She's a voracious reader, and just turned 8, so I kind of thought it would perfect. And it is! She reads it all the time, and refers to it just as much. She's learning, but in a fun way that she controls. All the stuff inside is pretty neat, and she frequently tells me things I don't know, all courtesy of the book. Her birthday was actually just a week ago, and this is so far and beyond her favorite possession, I actually had a cake decorator make her a cake that looked like the book, but instead of "The Daring Book for Girls", it said, "The Daring Cake for Gracie". She loved it!Get more detail about The Daring Book for Girls.

Instructions Get it now!

Instructions is one of my favorite Neil Gaiman poems. As I commented when I listened to Gaiman's Fragile Things short story collection on cd last year, the poem is one of his pieces that I will actively dig out and reread occasionally. In the poem, the narrator instructs the reader on how to survive a fairy tale.

In this hardcover children's book edition, the poem is expanded upon by the fantastic artwork of Charles Vess. Vess may not be as frequent a Gaiman collaborator as Dave McKean is, but to my personal taste he's the more enjoyable of the two (your mileage may vary). Don't get me wrong, I love the work of Dave McKean (and Michael Zulli, and P. Craig Russell). I just love Vess' work a little bit more.

For Instructions, Vess posits the main character not as a typical human blundering through a fairy tale, but as a humanoid sort of canine / feline mix. There are pages in which the character looks decidedly canine, and others in which the face is feline to a fault ... and I found that very intriguing. In Gaiman's Blueberry Girl, Vess had the girl who is the subject of the poem change race and age every few pages; here, he finds a way to embody different aspects of the character without a drastic change in appearance. It works a more subtle magic on the reader, I think, as well as focusing less attention on the gender of the character being instructed.

A wonderful poem, beautifully illustrated. "Everthing you'll need to know on your journey," the cover copy says. Not just on a journey through a fairy tale, but on a journey through life.Get more detail about Instructions.

This Book Is Not Good For You (Secret) Right now

Hi! I just wanted to tell you a little bit about myself and this book/series. I am a Special Education teacher. From my experience working as a teacher, I know that boys are reluctant readers. I have 3 boys of my own. That's why I've made it my goal to motivate unmotivated or reluctant readers. I find books I think the boys will read and read them myself, so I can recommend it and discuss it with them if they decide to read it.
So, I started a Guys Read chapter on my block for the pre-teen boys in my neighborhood. I only have about 7 members, but I'm okay with that. We have so much fun. We take field trips to enhance the experience. To further enhance the experience, this year I've added books that also have the movie. Even though this series doesn't have a movie, I have included it in my summer book club reading list. I know the boys on my block will love this. It's written for pre-teen boys and girls. There are a couple of pictures but I definitely wouldn't describe it as a picture book. The pictures merely enhance the book. The kids are the heroines of the book so children will love that. It's nice clean reading. It's great for parents as well. If you're the type of parent who likes to know what your children are reading, I'd say give this series a try. You won't be disappointed.Get more detail about This Book Is Not Good For You (Secret).

My grandson, a 9 1/2-year-old reader, loved this book -a gift from me, his nana. The book is filled with ancient history, which is written in a way that is highly appealing to young readers. As a former reading specialist and library media specialist, I would recommend this book for upper elementary age through middle school. Cheapest Beautiful Creatures

Me prendeu do começo ao fim e nunca ficou cansativo.

Get more detail about Beautiful Creatures.

What a totally wacked out way of splitting this book which weren't never mint t'be split in the ferst place. Woops. Buying American Medical Association Boy's Guide to Becoming a Teen

I was looking for a book that was not so detailed that it read like a text book, but had enough substance to answer the questions a preteen may have. As a mom I read through it myself first for appropriateness and then gave it to my 9 year old. Initially he skimmed through it and read only the parts he wanted. However, I find that he does go back to it periodically as a reference when needed. Sometimes the book provided him the answers he was looking for and other times it was just the starting grounds for a talk. Either way it is serving its purpose.

Order The BFG (My Roald Dahl)

On the face of it, "The BFG" seems just plain wrong as a children's book. Its story revolves around giants who steal children out of their beds in the night and eat them. Oh, that's just PERFECT for a bedtime story!

And as a parent, do you really want a book in which the title character delights in flatulence?

Indeed, the scary parts of the story may have led to my 7-year-old son having some nightmares. But both he and sister still loved the book! And as for the flatulence - "whizzpopping," in the giant's parlance -- of course, my kids thought that was FUNNY!

"The BFG" is the story of a Big Friendly Giant ("The BFG") and a little girl named Sophie. The BFG introduces Sophie to the strange world of giants, and together they set out to stop the nine child-eating giants.

The book has a little too much talk - and too little action - in the first half. But still there's something charming about the relationship between the BFG and Sophie. And, as a read-aloud book, it was delightful to read the giant's peculiar vocabulary. Human beings are "human beans," dreams are "bogthumpers," "grobswitchers" or "trogglehumpers," and he eats snozzcumbers while drinking frobscottle. (Run that sentence through your spell checker!)

The giant and Sophie are very likable main characters and the story takes some wondrous turns. They go to the land of dreams, for instance, and capture dreams and nightmares to put in jars. There's plenty of silliness, and then an exciting rush to a conclusion that kept us all going.

"The BFG" is the fourth Roald Dahl book I've read to my kids. Each one leaves me shaking my head - sometimes in wonderment, sometimes in puzzlement. But they've never failed to surprise!

Llama Llama Red Pajama Review

I ordered a rag book of Llama Llama Red Pajama...I received the doll. The invoice clearly said "rag book", but the item number on the invoice and the sticker on the item matched each other. Clearly, there is a mis-filed or wrongly entered item number. I called customer service and a very nice lady took care of me. I reiterated that the item I received was NOT the rag book, and I wanted to make sure I did not receive the doll again. Guess what? Two days later, another doll arrived. So then I got to make two trips to the UPS store. The second order did not give me the option of entering a reason when I went to return it--so I am telling you now.
I purchased the RAG BOOK from Barnes & Noble with no problem whatsoever.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Top Quality

With the limited number of published humorous books in the United States, many Americans would like to see more humor in literature. Well the "The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian" is one of the most humorous novels I have ever read. This amazing novel is sadly challenged because it uses foul, racist language and describes sexual acts. Many young adults do not mind this content in books because they know it's fiction. Sadly many parents do not see the point in their child reading such a book. But parents have to allow their children to GROW UP and become more mature. Children have to learn about this anyway so why not in a fake humorous story. "The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian" uses first person, diction, and imagery. All of these literary elements intrigue the reader and allows the reader to imagine the story like if it was from his or her point of view. Using first person gives the humor a powerful lift creating a humor that will make you fall off your chair. "The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian" is a funny novel that I recommend to all readers.Get more detail about The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Bram Stoker's Dracula This instant

As an Author myself (The Q-ube ) which has a moderate amount of intrigue and games, its wonderful to read Bram Stoker's Dracula. As it is so complex, its also the first book that presents the unsuspecting world with the creepy and scary concept of a blood-sucking creature. Never could Bram Stoker have imagined the impact his book would have made. Its still the best horror book on vampires ever written, and is now classic literature.I have read this book more than once and i each am time i find each a wealth of information, that i missed before. It really is the kind of book you have to read more than once to fully comprehend the striking characteristics of Count Dragul. I recommend this masterpiece highly.

Low Price Hatchet: 20th Anniversary Edition

It's hard to believe that this book was written 20 years ago because the situation could be present day and the protagonist could be any one of us struggling to survive a plane crash in the wilderness. My 8-year old and I read this book together and compared it to "My Side of the Mountain," also a boy's survival story: Hatchet was preferred by both of us for its drama and the depth of emotion the author provides for the boy, Brian Robeson. Life lessons in this story include determination (building a fire) and the ability to change yourself by recalling things you have learned in your past and pulling from your inner strength. Brian's toughening to both the environment and his family's split makes the reader realize that we should appreciate what we have and accept the things we cannot control.Get more detail about Hatchet: 20th Anniversary Edition.

Save House of Night, Books 1-4 (Marked / Betrayed / Chosen / Untamed)

I have to admit...I don't read "deep" novels, rarely (if ever) Oprah's "pick". I read mostly at night before I go to sleep, on vacations or planes, etc. I like books that pull me in within the first chapter....maybe two. I like mysteries and yes, I good vampire story or two. I have read the Twilight series and the Dead Until Dark series (which is my favorite of the two, by the way), so when I found House of Night, it looked like something that would work for me so I gave it a try and I really love it. The read is quick, easy and I love the twist on "vampyres". All the characters are likable, even the ones you want the heroine to beat. This series knocks Twilight out of the playground and rivals Sookie (well, maybe not Sookie with Eric but..). I'm already halfway through book 4 and am glad there are more. The 1-4 pack that Amazon offers is a good deal for the $ too.Get more detail about House of Night, Books 1-4 (Marked / Betrayed / Chosen / Untamed).

Cheapest Beautiful Boy

My book club read this book last month, and all 7 of us felt that we learned a lot from it. I have had no personal experience with drug addiction in my family, so it gave me an idea of what others have been through. After Nic relapsed for what seemed the 100th time, I felt like I had had enough.......and then I put myself in his parents' shoes. What sadness and frustration they must feel. I think it was very brave for David Sheff, Nic, his mother and the rest of the family to tell this very personal story to the whole wide world, but I thank them for the directness and the honesty. I hope it will be comforting to parents who have similar stories to tell.

When my daughter was in high school, she responded to any criticism I gave her by telling me I should just be happy that she didn't do drugs! I would tell her that I was happy about that, but I had other expectations, as well. After reading this book 18 years after her h.s. graduation, I called her and said in a very loud voice, I'M REALLY GLAD YOU DIDN'T DO DRUGS!

The book is very well written. I found it difficult to put down, and I was most certainly hoping for a happy ending, but I knew there wouldn't be one. I have not felt compelled to read Nic's book. I would like to read what he has to say in about 30 more years. In the meantime, I truly hope that he will be able to fully recover.Get more detail about Beautiful Boy.

Cheap City Of Bones - Mortal Instruments, Book One

City of Bones is an amazingly well-crafted world of Shadowhunters (demon killers), demons and halfbreeds (vampires, werewolves, warlocks, etc.) living amongst humans. Huge twists and impossible to foresee revelations matched with an excellent supernatural story line, vivid description and thrilling action make City of Bones a marvelous series starter.

There was a subtle, yet undeniable message about race relations in City of Bones. Evil shadowhunter Valentine planned long ago to kill all of the halfbreeds in order to keep humanity pure and much his attitude is reminiscent of Adolf Hitler. In present time, you see Clary trying to decide for herself if the halfbreeds are in fact lesser beings.

The characters are fleshed out nicely, with various unique traits. I absolutely love that not all the characters in City of Bones are strictly heterosexual and the point is made without involving anything sexual in nature. Sexuality is a huge factor in teenage lives and while I felt the closeted aspect was unfortunate, it lent credence to character actions. I have high hopes of this being expanded on further in future books.

I wasn't a huge fan of the weird friendship/unrequited love/inappropriate triangle between Simon, Clary and Jace. Actually, it was downright uncomfortable, but it was different and very emotionally striking.

City of Bones is a creative and captivating novel that could be complete all on its own, but I'm very glad that it's the beginning of a series. Cassandra Clare has a wonderfully creative edge which is proven completely in this book. I won't be waiting long to read City of Ashes.Get more detail about City Of Bones - Mortal Instruments, Book One.

Buying I'm a Big Brother

This book was well written, with a cute story line for a toddler. It was easy for our 2 1/2 year old son to follow and the level of the story was easy for him to understand.Get more detail about I'm a Big Brother.
